The facet joints are the joints in the back of the spine which allow motion. Over time these joints can develop arthritis and instability. Occasionally some of the fluid in the joint can escape and form a cyst which causes compression of the nerves in the spinal canal, resulting in pain, tingling, numbness, and/or weakness.

If symptoms fail to improve with nonoperative measures, Dr. Clark may recommend removal of the cyst to take pressure off the nerves and relieve these symptoms. Often fluid in and around these joints indicates that there is instability of the spine. If there is significant instability, Dr. Clark may recommend removal of the cyst as well as stabilizing that segment (fusion).
