Discs are the soft cushions that act as shock absorbers between your vertebrae. Over time healthy discs tend to lose water and become more brittle, transmitting more load to the adjacent bones. These changes can cause neck or back pain. As discs lose height, there can also be compression of your spinal cord/nerves which can also cause neck or back pain as well as symptoms in your arms or legs.
